I had felt the need to implement a sidebar in the header of an existing theme, and therefore, embarked on an investigation of how to implement a sidebar or widget zone for a theme. I found useful information in a few places:

I came to the understanding that:

  • register_sidebar(), register_sidebars(), unregister_sidebar() are used inside the file functions.php; this allows the backend management of the availability of sidebar or widget zones so that widgets can be assigned to these declared or known sidebar / widget zones;
  • dynamic_sidebar(), is_active_sidebarr(), is_dynamic_sidebar() are used inside template php files to display or control the display of static content or dynamic widget content;
